Online crime map helps keep public informed

The West Jordan Police Department is participating in an online crime mapping program that will allow residents to input their address and view crime statistics for their area. The CrimeReports.com site is free to the public and includes optional e-mail updates.

The map empowers viewers by informing them of criminal activity in their area and enabling them to make informed decisions to help improve the safety of their families, friends, property and community.

The PD believes the map is a useful tool that can help raise awareness and encourage viewers to work cooperatively with law enforcement. However, there are some limitations to be aware of before viewing the map:

·  The base maps used by CrimeReports.com can be dated or contain errors. Some addresses – especially new neighborhoods – may not be available. The City of West Jordan has no control over the CrimeReports.com website and their mapping tools.

·  Although the PD provides the statistical data to CrimeReports.com, the PD doesn’t control how it is interpreted in the analytical section of CrimeReports.com. The charts and graphs depicted on the site are created and maintained by CrimeReports.com.

·  In order to protect victims of certain crimes and the security of pending investigations, CrimeReports.com has not been given access to all crime data. Therefore, the data used on the CrimeReports.com analytical section is incomplete and should only be used as an informational tool. The West Jordan Police Department has accurate charts and graphs available to the public in its Annual Report and Budget Reports, which can be found online at www.wjordan.com.

Visit CrimeReports.com and see what’s happening in our neighborhood.

 How Does Neighborhood Watch Work?

Neighborhood Watch operates in basic ways: The neighborhood “Watchers” (citizens involved in Neighborhood Watch) carefully watch and observe their neighborhood immediately notifying the police if any suspicious or criminal activity is seen.  In addition, members utilize crime prevention measures to make it much more difficult for criminals to perpetrate crime within the community.

Neighborhood Watch is NOT a group of vigilantes or lawless people taking the law into their own hands, nor do the people take the place of the Police.  They simply watch for suspicious individuals or events that may jeopardize the safety of our families living within our communities.

We need people to get involved by helping to make our Community safe from those that wish us harm.  We’re looking for a few individuals willing to get involved in the community by being Block Captains.  Once we have Block Captains we can organize our community.
